Abstract

Starting a successful business can be no easy task; in 1984 Jim Koch had the dream to give America better beer. Today his dream of that better beer has become reality and evolved into the largest craft brewer in the world known as The Boston Beer Company, brewing his award winning Samuel Adams beer. Growth for this once small town brewery has skyrocketed who now owns and operates several breweries. With this new growth comes way to manage all the equipment and man power needed to run such a substantial company. Koch has made sure that his master brewers and employees are truly among the best and often works hand in hand with them to give the world a better beer. His supervisory skills have led to extreme moral among employees and top managers. Whether it is from flexible hours, company benefits, or being able to have a beer mass produced by winning the homebrew competition, the employee-supervisor rolls are above par. By carefully picking supervision, managing the estimated 800 employees and exceeding company goals has really made this company succeed. By also staying loyal to his relaxed style of leadership Jim Koch and The Boston Beer Company will always be the role model for craft brewers down the road.

Everywhere one goes today the taps at the local bars are multiplying; what used to be three or four beers, has turned into thirteen or fourteen. This craft beer revolution has spawned many small local breweries. To understand exactly what defines this craft beer renaissance, one need to know what makes craft beer “craft.” The definition of craft beer is much more controversial than one may think.
