It was 1869. The land became free and the democracy was established. It is when the completion of making of first railroad was done. My husband who was an entrepreneur had been thinking about mining in the west. He said that land was prosperous in the west and they were full of gold. He just wanted to make our life better. But I was unsure about all of this. According to me we were happy. I was afraid of any kind of unknown things. I was happy spending time in my garden. Then we sold our less necessary goods and set out for the west. I started to pack my wagon which would be our home during the journey. I packed all things, stored food for us including our cows. We thought the cows would give milk in the journey. Many of houses were running out of stored food and they became hungry and helpless. The sufferings of Children’s were a beggar description and I tried to help them by giving food if I had. Many people were suffering from different diseases and many people were dying. I couldn’t tolerate these anymore. Almost every night I spend crying alone. Then at last we reached west. But there were more sufferings and exhaustion. We started to work hard to build our home. Sometimes I with my husband worked on night too. In that time I learned a lot of things. I learned how to wield an axe. In spring I started to make my garden after my husband cleared all of trees and stomps. I was spending time in gardening, doing household chores. I had to haul water for cleaning, cooking and watering gardens. I have heard that a man was killed. I have become afraid because my husband work outside and most of the time he remains outside. He spends a lot of time in mining but couldn’t find any gold till now. May be we have done wrong coming here (Pioneer Women, 2011).
