The great depression on European colonial empires was one of the most effective events in twentieth century history because of its impacts on the colonial states of European empires. The First World War lasted from 1914 to 1918 and during the war the great power countries such as Germany, France, Britain, Russia, and some other powerful states spent much money in military actions during the war. After world war one there was an economic slump that occurred to most of the states. "The Great Depression started in 1929 in the USA and spread to the rest of the world causing a slump in productivity and soaring unemployment levels across many countries."1 Especially European empires and their dominions were suffered of the great depression deeply. The main causes of the great depression were the breakdown of the gold standard, the economic influences of the First World War, the imbalance of global economic and German reparations, the geo-politic and economic disturbance which were particularly caused by the war in Central and South Eastern Europe, The US stock market fracture and in 1929, and the application of mistaking economic rules and the shortage of worldwide financial leadership. Britain and France used their colonial states sources for their wars and they promised the colonial countries to give them independence after the First World War wars. There were a lot of European colonial empires during occurring of the great depression such as German, Britain, and France. The Great depression had a main cause of World War 2 because it helped Hitler to come to power and Hitler was the major cause of the Second World War. This paper will demonstrate the impacts of the great depression on British Empire and India which was one of its dominion states.
