INTRODUCTION

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was born January 15, 1929 and he died on April 4, 1968. He was an American clergyman, activist and a prominent leader in the African American Civil Rights Movement. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy was to secure the civil rights in the United States and he is a human rights icon today. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr was a martyr by two Christian churches. He was a Baptist minister, and he had become a civil rights activist early in his career. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr led the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott and he helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957, which he served as the first president in that conference. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr efforts led to the 1963 March on Washington, where he delivered his speech “I have a dream”, which he raised the public consciousness of the civil rights movement and he established himself as one of the greatest orators in the United states history.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr background information is that he was born in Atlanta, Georgia. He graduated from Morehouse College with a B.A. in 1948, Crozer Theological Seminary with a B.D. in 1951, and Boston University with a ph. D. in 1955. He was a son of the pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr was ordained in 1947 and he became a minister in 1954 of the Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr led the black boycott in 1955-56 of segregated city bus lines and in 1956 he gained a major victory and prestige as a civil rights leader when Montgomery buses began to operate on a desegregated basis.
