Some argue that companies and private individuals, not government,should pay the bill of pollution clean up.To what extend you agree ordisagree?

Pollution has widely been perceived as a threat to the sustainability of this planet. While people have no controversy over this fact, they are well engaged in the debate about who should play a bigger part in tackling this problem and bearing the cost of pollution. My opinion is that the onus should be placed on companies and individuals.

 

As companies and individual citizens are responsible for many kinds of pollution the world is facing, they should be punished. Companies have indulged in the use of energy-intensive practices and shown little interest in environmentally friendly technology. Individual citizens are indifferent to their habits such as using plastic bags without showing any intention to cut the use of energy and water. As they enjoy the benefits brought by actions that cause pollution, they should take the cost incurred alike.

 

Transferring the cost of clean-up from the government to companies and citizens can prompt them to reform their behaviours and make them environmentally responsible. Fearing that the extra expense can add to the cost of operation, the private sector might turn to environmentally benign solutions. Individual citizens are encouraged to buy eco-labelled products and patronise energy-efficient technology.

It is also worth remembering that for populated countries such as China and the US, the government is not likely to afford such a big bill. For example, the use of petrol is one of the biggest causes of pollution in the world. Unless the cost of pollution is manifested in the rising cost of petrol, tens of millions of car users in China are not compelled to reduce their dependence on petrol and consider public transportation or cycling.
