The Renaissance (“rebirth”) was a cultural movement from the 14th century to the 17th century which began in Italy and spread to the rest of Europe. Renaissance scholars employed the humanist method in their studies. Renaissance humanism is an educational program founded on knowledge of the Classical Latin and Greek languages. Once they mastered the languages they could read deeply into the classical works of the ancient Greek and Roman authors, absorbing what the philosophers had to teach them about how to succeed in life. It taught them how to read, write and think. In the Gargantua and Pantagruel reading, Pantagruel was the son of Gargantua and his mother died giving birth to him because of his huge size. Because he was big, his brain and memory was twice the normal size of an average man. When he was a little older his father sent him to Paris to study. Gargantua wrote a letter to his son advising him not to waste his youth and to learn as much as he could and to be a well-rounded person. He advised his son to surpass him and to learn everything that Paris can teach him and to come home when he’s done so he can give him his blessing before he dies.

Colleges and Universities today are different; the American higher education has changed. Schools entered a new phase where they stopped being intellectually driven and culturally oriented and model themselves as a business. The tuition for schools is skyrocketing. Parents and students pay a lot of money for a college education and they expect that their degrees will help them in their professional success. College and Universities hired a lot of teachers from the outside that will teach and prepare the students for the workforce. The schools are not teaching the students to think but rather to prepare them for a job. This may be a good thing if you just want a better job and make more money. People failed in their professions because they’re stuck doing something they don’t love or committed to....
