THE IMAGE OF WOMEN IN THE USA

         I] The image of women in the society : 

 

A- The role of the women in the family 

For many years, you should know that American society follows the model of the "perfect" American family who is in other words called the "American way of life". In this vision, the woman is a housewife so she stays at home and plays the role of wife and mother. She takes care of the education of his children and takes care of them, but she doesn't work, it's her husband who brought the salary. She cooks, she maintains his home and teaches that to his own daughters. She represents the emotional side. This conception of things probably comes from the fact that the U.S. is a very puritanical Catholic country and it is the best model to follow. This picture was shown for example on television in the once very popular American show tv "7th Heaven".

Although in the U.S., there is still a majority of housewives, in the past few years women have started to become more independent and liberated. there is less housewives than before and women are no longer content to play only this role. This new image of the family was also represented in american show tv like Desperate Housewives which depicts a new mindset and vision of the housewife today. 

Moreover, in some states the woman is still considered as very inferior compared to men and this can lead to some violence

B- The remaining problem of violence against women nowadays 

Violence against women in the United States are still there and the level of importance of those present to us rather shocking figures : 

 

  - Over 22 million women in the United States have been raped in their lifetime.

  - Of the 18% of women who have survived rape or attempted rape, 12% were younger than 12yo  when they were first raped, and 30% were between 11 and 17yo.

  - 64% of women who reported being raped, physically assaulted, were victimized by a current or former husband, cohabiting partner,...
