Today’s health care managers have many roles and functions. “Health care managers and administrators are increasingly assuming leadership and management responsibilities for multiple units and departments. (Purnell, 1999). There are six functions of management: Planning, Organizing, Leading, Controlling, Directing, and Decision making. All of these functions are universal in management and are used to help achieve maximum success in any industry including health care.

According to Buchbinder and Shanks (2012), a manager must possess several key competencies. These competencies are: Conceptual skills, the ability to analyze and solve complex issues. Technical skills, skills that reflect expertise or ability to perform a specific work tasks. Interpersonal skills, skills that enable a manager to communicate with and work well with others.

The health care organization is an extremely large organization. “The roles of managers vary according to their titles and the functions of their facilities.” (Locsin, 2015). Management positions are seen in all levels not just at the top. You have low level and high level management positions. Basically a manager working under a manager. Regardless of the level of management every manager’s job is to help the organization succeed.

These functions at my current job do not exist. I think it might do some good for our management to take this kind of course. If I were involved in management at my job things would probably run a lot more smoothly. The lines of communication are completely broken and the manager we have has no type of leadership skills what so ever. He is constantly getting walked on and talked to crazy by employees and he picks and chooses which employees he wants to discipline. One employee can get away with somethings while others cannot. There is also a lack of organization which is apparent at our staff meetings.
