Greatest Contribution
* Issued the Philippine Declaration of Independence on June 12, 1898. On June 23, 1898,
* Aguinaldo transformed his dictatorial government into a revolutionary government.
* Became the first elected president of the First Philippine Republic, a government constituted by the Malolos Congress under the Malolos Constitution. Thus, this government is also called the Malolos Republic.
Controversies
* Bonifacio refused to recognize the revolutionary government headed by Aguinaldo and attempted to reassert his authority, accusing the Aguinaldo faction of treason and by issuing orders contravening orders issued by the Aguinaldo faction. At Aguinaldo's orders, Bonifacio and his brothers were arrested and, in a mock trial lasting one day, convicted of treason, and sentenced to death. After some vacillation, Aguinaldo initially commuted the death sentence. Andrés and Procopio were executed by firing squad on 10 May 1897 at Mount Buntis, Maragondon, Cavite.
* He sold the Philippines to the Spanish for $800,000. He agreed for a self-exile to Hong Kong and for the dissolving of his government to Fernando Primo de Rivera in the famous Pact of Biak-na-Bato. This is in exchange for an insanely huge $800,000 bribe.
* He led the Americans to colonize the Philippines. His return to Philippines through Admiral Dewey’s help gave the Spanish reasons to sell the Philippines to the Americans. This gave the Americans a foothold and leverage to start the flames of their colonization.
