In this paper I will be analyzing the different operational management perspectives of Dell Inc. Specifically I will be analyzing the company’s main line of business, a specific type of operations process that takes place there with their products, the nature of the operations, and the global strategy of the company.

The main line of business for Dell consists of a vast range of technology products for the consumer, education, enterprise, and government sectors. They offer printers, Ethernet switches, and peripherals, such as displays and projectors. In addition to the technology products, Dell also provides asset recovery, financing, infrastructure consulting, support, systems integration, training, and hosted IT services.

A specific type of operations process (service) that takes place at Dell with their personal computers is lean inventory with just-in-time manufacturing methods (lean manufacturing). Dell uses this process to create their made-to-order personal computers. This allows Dell to operate on a direct to consumer model which produces extremely low inventory costs and creates an advantage over their competitors. Lean manufacturing Improves speed of delivery and deals with the reduction or elimination of many types of waste with lowest cost and customer defined quality as driving forces. In Lean technology, identifying and eliminating waste. Lean companies like Dell ensure that each manufacturing process takes roughly the same amount of time by adjusting the processes themselves or the resources dedicated to each process.

Lean manufacturing consists of four steps; product design, process design, personnel/organizational elements, and manufacturing planning and control.
