There are many different personality traits that we deal with on a day to day basis but bullying in the workplace has become an epidemic. Being bullied at work can lead to low self esteem, job dissatisfaction and no motivation. Hoel states (as cited in Salin, 2003):

Researchers have reported alarming findings about the negative consequences associated with bullying, both for the individuals and the organizations concerned. As for the effects on the organization, bullying has been shown to be associated with higher turnover and intent to leave the organization, higher absenteeism, and decreased commitment and productivity. (p. 1213).

As a manager I was tasked with bringing the best out of the employees. “This task of understanding and influencing the employee's motivation is often made easier, if the company attempts to select employees with specific values, beliefs and needs that align with those of the company”. Emery & Oertel (2006). But what do you do if the narcissistic bully is the owner of the company?

Keashly and Jagatic (2003) defined bullying as interactions between organizational members that are characterized by repeated hostile verbal and nonverbal behavior, often nonphysical, directed at a person in such a way that the target's sense of himself as a competent worker and person is negatively affected.

In choosing our employees, we had some of the best in the field and were more than capable of doing their jobs with little to no supervision. One of our employees had been with the company for over 9 years, he rarely had call backs and the customers adored him. Instead of praising this employee for the good he was doing he was often times insulted, verbally abused or spoken to as if he were a child. He was often called while in the field to be told he was slow and was taking too long on a job. This did not set well with this employee and he began to take even longer on jobs, show up late and began calling in sick. A few times a year, I was left...
