“Let Those Who Ride Decide:”

1. a. Motorcyclists should have a choice whether or not they wear helmets. If a person wants to risk their own life for the wind in their hair, it is entirely up to them. Common arguments against helmets have valid points. For example, it obstructs the peripheral vision of the rider and that could cause an accident. Another argument is that it is the riders’ discretion. If you think morally, it is okay to harm yourself, and you are not harming any other people, then ethically that is right. One of the most popular reasons that people pay obscene amounts of money for this small piece of machine is for the freedom, the adrenaline that pumps through your veins as the wind whips through your hair. And some people feel you can’t achieve that same high when you have a helmet on.

Helmet laws do target motorcyclists specifically because they are set in place just for motorcyclist. Mopeds and bicycle riders have the choice whether or not they wear a helmet and they are also on the same road as a motorcycle. Why would there be any difference, they are all on the same road and in the same danger. Ethically speaking, if motorcyclists are made to wear helmets, why stop there? Cars hit pedestrians all the time, and wearing a helmet could prevent serious injury for them, so the state should make pedestrians wear helmets as well. Society is somewhat responsible for its civilians. If a car was to hit a motorcyclists and it’s obviously the cars fault, why shouldn’t the society help out the rider? They would if two cars crashed into each other. If the motorcyclists deliberately wrapped their motorcycle around a tree, than no the society should not help them to any extent. But it would be hard to prove that. Society’s laws should be to help someone in need any way they can, but this is not a perfect world.

b. Motorcyclists should have to wear a helmet. If a person were to wear a helmet then they are potentially saving their lives, their loved ones...
