George Orwell 1984

1. Explain why the party used these 3 slogans: war is peace freedom is slavery Ignorance is Strength.

-At first glance, these slogans seem to be contradictory and illogical, but the society in 1984 is run by a group of people that have pretty much brainwashed or intimidated the entire population into believing whatever they promote.  So, these three slogans are lived by and sworn by, and the essence of everything that the Party represents. Each of these three slogans has double meanings--one for the Party and one for the people as a whole.

2. What value does The Party get by using institutions such as the Ministry of Love to deal with war? Give some examples in current use of this type of redefinition of terms.

3. In Oceania, what was the ideology of the economic system? How was this working out for the population? Did any segment of the population benefit from this system?

- The economic system is controlled, and powered by the party. The economic system appears to exist just to keep citizens occupied with doing ordinary employments. The steady shortages of products remind individuals that Oceania is always at war.

4. There are no “laws” in Oceania. Who benefits from this? Why?

- The Party benefits from this. No laws, meaning that everyone thinks the same way.

5. Why would the govt show movies of war horror, such as the bombing of the refugee ship?

- The Party felt that outer party individuals will acknowledge horrible pictures of children being exploded as a form of entertainment.

6. What is the value to the govt of the Two Minute Hate and a villain such as Goldstein?

7. What was the name of the underground dedicated to the overthrow of the state? Was O’Brien a member?

-Brotherhood. Yes he was a member.

8. What is Thoughtcrime? Is America going towards a Thoughtcrime society? Explain. How does political correctness facilitate a society ruled by Thoughtcrime?
