INTRODUCTION
Qualitative chemical analysis, branch of chemistry that deals with the identification of elements or grouping of elements present in a sample. The techniques employed in qualitative analysis vary in complexity, depending on the nature of the sample. In some cases it is necessary only to verify the presence of certain elements or groups for which specific tests applicable directly to the sample such as:
a) Solubility tests to see if a solid dissolved in a solvent.
b) Precipitation tests to see if a solid is formed when two dissolved substances are mixed.
c) pH tests to determine the concentration of acidity or basicity of the substances.
d) Flame test to see what colour is produced when the substance is burned.
More often the sample is a complex mixture, and a systematic analysis must be made in order that all the constituents may be identified.
The two isomers are in equilibrium when the solid complex is dissolved in water. The cis-form is more soluble and and exists in high proportion in solution but it is slowly converted into the trans-form when the solution is evaporated slowly. In the solid state only one isomer can exist depending on the method of preparation of the complex.
OBJECTIVE
The purpose of this experiment is to determine the physical properties and isomeric nature copper(II) and chromium complexes.
