1. Why do you think White is returning to this lake in Maine? Provide one passage from the text that supports your answer.

Text: I have since become a saltwater man, but sometimes in summer there are days when the restlessness of the tides and the fearful cold of the sea water…A few weeks ago this feeling got so strong I bought myself a coupe of bass hooks and a spinner and returned to the lake where we used to go, for a week’s fishing and to revisit old haunts.

Because White recalls the memories of the lake when he was child with his father, he wants the placidity of a lake in the woods, so he decides to bring his son return to the lake in Maine. Back then, going to the lake his family was a big business for him, and he cherishes the memory of the time with his family. Also, as a father, he wants to show his son this beautiful lake.

2. Which sensory detail appealed to you the most in this essay sight, sound, taste, smell touch? Provide a passage that illustrates that sense.

Passage: The only thing that was wrong now, really, was the sound of the place, an unfamiliar nervous sound of the outboard motors. This was the note that jarred, the one thing that would sometimes break the illusion and set the years moving.

The description of the sound stands me out. According the passage, White signs over the elapsed time. The sound that he hears back then and the sound that he hears now are different. He is sad about the placidity of the lake is ruined by the annoying sound of the motors. On the other hand, the sound reminds him of the old times with his family, and he really wants to get back to the past.
