Assignment 4 – Basic Biomechanics

1. Using Table 4.1 in your textbook define Newton’s laws AND provide 2 examples (in your own words) of each.

a. Law of inertia- The physical nature of force. Resistance an object has to change its state of motion. Ex when a car accelerates and decelerates from a collision. Also when a ball rolls down a hill it will keep rolling unless friction from something stops it.

b. Laws of acceleration- a force is proportional to the product of the product of an objects mass multiplied by is acceleration. Ex when you’re running the 40 yard dash your start is slower than when you get out and get to moving you tend to speed up also when cars race they start off slower than they finish but once they go to shifting gears they speed up.

c. Laws of reaction- explains that force cannot act alone on an object. Ex when a batter in baseball gets the ball thrown his reaction is to go the opposite way of the ball. Also when a fighter is in the ring they try to go the opposite way of a punch or kick

2. Define a VECTOR quantity using your own words. Vector quantity is mathematical way of providing us with the value of force.

3. What is the difference between a MOMENT of force and a force? Fore is simply a change in velocity and moment of force is the product and its distance from an axis.

4. How are rotational movements measured? Using the moment of force and torque M = F. d

5. Identify the two phases of gait. What are some of the common abnormalities of gait? Provide real world examples. The two phases are double limb support and single limb support ex when someone run one limb is on the ground at a time. But when we get ready to wrestle we have a wide base with both feet on the ground.
