Unit 1: P5 P6 M3 D2 Dilys White

For my health and social care placement I went to a primary school and was in a class with Year 1’s. I had to carry out a group interaction and a one-to-one interaction.

For my one-to -one interaction I helped a child with their numeracy. The child I worked with had autism so he was struggling and was further behind in numeracy then the rest of his class. So we went into a quiet room and used square plates with the numbers 0-10 on them. I got the child to choose any number plate he wanted and he had to put his finger on where he thought it started and trace over it with his finger 5 or 6 times. After that I would take away the number plate he would have to write the number down on a piece of paper. But he had to make sure he started the number in the correct place and make sure he was writing it the correct way round and not back to front. If he got it correct then I would give him a sticker with a smiley face on. If he got it incorrect he would trace over the number plate with his finger again until he got it right on paper. The aim of this was to work with child in numeracy to support number formation and to encourage the child to think about where to start and think about the shape on the number.

For example I would ask the child to write the number down on the paper but instead they would scribble and when I asked them to stop scribbling and write the number down they would continue to scribble. So I had to repeat myself a lot until the child would finally write the number down. I think some of this problem was due to the child’s maturity and as they were fairly young and had autism he naturally didn’t have the understanding or ability to listen. Also we did this activity in the staff room as one teacher couldn’t do numeracy with the whole class and have one child on a different level of learning to the...
