Adaptive Culture

Organizational culture is the behaviors and values that contribute to the social and psychological environment of an organization. Organization culture comprises of experiences, expectations, values and philosophies that hold the organization together and is shown through its inner activities, self-image and interaction within and outside the organization. Can is regarded as a major asset or a liability to an organization depending on whether leads to desired behaviors or not (Black 2003). Adaptive culture affects the productivity and performance of an organization and gives directions on customer care and services, punctuality and attendance, safety and product quality as well as concern for the environment.

Fostering an adaptive culture is one aspect that enables an organization to meet series of adaptive challenges in the future times. Building an adaptive culture is a medium to long term goal and it can only begin through mobilization today (Black 2003). Managers should consider the current challenges they today face as an opportunity of solving the immediate problems and find operational ways of handling what comes in the future. Knowledgeable leadership is required to foster adaptive culture and therefore leaders must actively state the importance of being flexible, creative and unafraid of change. Adaptive culture considers change as an opportunity for improvement.

Leaders should make a list of values, beliefs, norms and assumptions that will help guide people’s behavior. The basis of bottom up transformation begins with empowerment of self-motivated and self-directed teams. This will ensure creativity and adaptiveness. It is considered that the most collaboration one that is informal, voluntary and self-supervised. Good personal relationships lead to a successful collaboration in an organization which is a key factor of ensuring success (Needle 2004).
