The term tragedy is used to describe many different calamities and disasters in one’s life, but it is Aristotle’s book of literary theory titled Poetics that gives the definition that literary tragedies are measured against. This is also true of his definition of the tragic hero. He described the hero as someone of high stature or noble birth, of high character but not perfect, with a tragic flaw which causes his downfall, and has a self-revelation because of the fall.
