To further explain why change is needed in ASU’s enrollment system I interviewed an out of state resident. The interviewee in this case was Dan Schweigel, a business exploratory major. This has been Dan’s second year at ASU. When I asked about his opinion on the current system in place for class registration he had a few things to say. First lets dive into the numbers of being an out of state student.

I asked Dan how much he was paying to go to school here, which he replied with “all fees included I am paying over 40,000 dollars a year to go to school at Arizona State.” The 40,000 dollars includes everything from tuition to room and board in the dorms. Dan was the first to admit that he is not the brightest when it comes to mathematics. His placement test put him in the lowest math class available at ASU, MAT 110. Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses, but for Dan his weakness in mathematics really puts him at a disadvantage for class scheduling.

“As a freshman I first had to take MAT 110, then MAT 117 in my fall semester. This is where the scheduling issue really lies. Dan is an out of state student, already paying huge tuition costs. For an out of state student trying to get caught back up over the summer you can expect to pay over 2,000 dollars for a three-credit course. This is a huge fee and given how much money Dan has already invested in the University he wishes there was another option for him that made more sense financially.

With all the other testimony that has been discussed involving stress over scheduling issues and falling behind a change is necessary to accommodate the student body. Students like Dan are paying huge amounts of money just to attend this institution and obtain a degree. The fact that people like Dan are struggling to enroll in classes because they...
