INTRODUCTION

This module aims at giving you a good perspective of what teaching means and how to

effectively perform the teaching task. The module tackles each related topic in teacher

education in a systematic and logically sequenced order. Its focus is to make the teacher

effective in disseminating information, skills, values and attitudes to his learners.

As you go through the various lectures, you will be gradually facilitated to do your own

learning on how to become an effective teacher. Each lecture will take you through a vital

area in teaching. The lecture topics are logically sequenced so as to build a firm hierarchy

of understanding the concept and practice of teaching. By the time you complete the last

lecture, you will have been helped to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills that will

greatly enhance your teaching.

Lecture one exposes you to three interrelated and basic concepts of teaching, learning,

training and education. These concepts, particularly teaching, becomes remains the main

focus of the module. Lecture two and three looks at teaching to a system in which specific

goals must be realised. This gives you a clear understanding of the various elements at

play in any teaching – learning situation and their interrelationship.

Lecture four and five dwells on the issue of learning objectives. Goals, aims, long – term

and short term objectives are discussed and the teacher guided on how to write them.

Lecture six and seven guides you into a clear understanding of the various methods of

teaching. Under each method, the positive and weaknesses are well brought out. Lecture
