This paper describes the list of recommendations made by the Barton consulting firm for the St Jude Leon Valley Hospital (STJLVH). The hospital is integrating with St Jude Hospital in San Antonio, the St Jude Sacramento and St Jude New York hospitals.

The hospital system has the following network requirements:

• Securely share LAN resources

• Share resources so hospitals are able to communicate

St Jude Valley Hospital Network (Network 3)

The network used by the St Jude Leon Valley Hospital is similar to the star network. AT&T provides the Internet connections for the hospital. The internet connections connect into separate fiber optic modems, and the modems are connected to the external router. The hospital uses Cisco ADA firewalls and the external router is at the border of the DMZ. The DMZ has a web proxy server, NAT setup FTP servers and several web servers. The staff uses two wireless networks; the SAFree wifi and the COSAwifi connection. Cisco devices are used for VPN. Authentication is handled through LDAP. The phone system uses VOIP. The VOIP phones connect to the LAN network.

St Jude San Antonio Hospital (Network 5)

The St Jude San Antonio hospital has five main communication points. The first one is for internet access. Communication is achieved through Time Warner Business Class fiber optic cable. The Time Warner MAN switch is connected to the Cisco ASA firewall and VPN appliance. The next three communication points are the individual routers connecting South Texas Radiology, GE Healthcare and Siemens Health Systems to the Nix Health Care System. South Texas Radiology is our partner organization which staffs radiologists to read and assess diagnostic images for patients and after hours and weekend images are sent via a T-1 carrier through the router to South Texas Radiology.
