SEMINAR QUESTIONS

SEMINAR 1: THE POLICE

This subject has the propensity to be a very wide topic, thus the seminar is designed to keep the subject matter focused on a particular area. However having said that, policing is a fluid and ever changing topic, that is widely covered and reported on in the news media. All of the following questions could and should contain some element of evidence from the current news.

ESSENTIAL READING

Revisit the power-point and the notes attached to the slides.

Reiner, ‘Politics of the Police’ (2010), chapter 3 pages 70 to 77 only. This chapter is an e-chapter on the Resource List in the Learning Rooms entitled, ‘Out of the Blue: Police Legitimacy 1856-2009 construction, Deconstruction, Reconstruction’. Make sure you are comfortable with finding the Resource List and negotiating your way round it.

FURTHER RECOMMENDED READING

Joyce, (2011), ‘Policing’: development and contemporary practice’, chapter 1, ‘The emergence and development of professional policing’. It is really only essential to read pages 5 and 6 and pages 11 -17. This book is an e-book on the Learning Room Resource List.

Davies, Croall, and Tyler 4th ed (2010), ‘Criminal Justice’ Chapter 6, p. 157 to 165.

Edwards. ‘Policing Theories’ (2005) chapter 2 p. 25 to 31
