Teenagers are Transforming Their Looks and Their Lives.

Everyone can associate with the modern meaning of the words “cosmetic surgery". But the procedure is a very old kind of practice; actually Indian physicians used it as early as the eighth century BC. Even Romans preformed simple techniques to fix congenital deformations (Schnur 4). Of course, the real history of cosmetic surgery started in the twentieth century because; as a result of the wars there were lots of deformities caused by metal weapons. So, since the doctors had the unfortunate opportunity to experiment on wounded solders, and they had an excess of anesthesia, they changed life-saving medical procedures to variable beauty-based surgeries. Everyone knows of at least one model or an actress who went under the knife to change her physical appearance. It has led to public pressure for individuals to have a perfect body or appearance, and this especially impacts teenagers.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, nearly 11 million cosmetic surgeries were performed in the United States in 2006. From this 11 million, 5.2 million were reconstructive surgery and the rest were beauty-based (NewsMax). Another statistics shows that in [stat8] 2003, more than 300,000 cosmetic surgeries were performed on teenagers, and the numbers are increasing each year (BBC News). It is understandable that all teens are suffering from self-doubt and esteem issues in this special stage of life, but are they well enough informed to face the consequences? One of the psychologist, who called cosmetic surgery “the 20th century’s disease” which fact have a pressure on teenagers at their most vulnerable time. Changing their appearance permanently while not knowing the serious consequences can be very dangerous for this young generation. Teenagers need to love their bodies because cosmetic surgeries are not just transforming their physical appearance but their lives as well.
