Personal Reflection on Values and Ethics

HUMN 330

I am not going to talk about religious beliefs just yet, but about matters so obvious that it has gone out of style to mention them. I have faith in in my neighbors. I know their mistakes, and I know that their qualities far overshadow their faults. I have faith in in my fellow citizens. Our headlines are streaked with crime. Yet for every criminal, there are ten thousand truthful, decent, kindhearted men and women. If it were not so, no child would live to grow up. Business could not go on from day to day. Civility is not news. It is buried in the obituaries, but it is a force stronger than crime. I have faith in in the tolerant graciousness of nurses, in the monotonous sacrifices of teachers. I have faith in in the unnoticed and endless fight against despairing odds that goes on quietly in almost every home in the land. I have faith in in the honest craft of workmen. I have faith in that the majority politicians are honest. For every corrupted councilman, there are hundreds of low paid or not paid at all politicians that do what they can without thanks or glory to make our system work. If this were not true, we would never have gotten past the original pilgrim settlements. I have faith in in the United States. Despite inadequacies, from lynching, to bad faith in high places, our nation has had the most decent and generous internal practices and foreign policies to be found anywhere in history. And finally, I have faith in in my whole race, regardless of color, and in the honesty, courage, cleverness, toughness, and goodness of the overwhelming majority of my brothers and sisters everywhere on this planet. I am proud to be a human being. I have faith in that we have come this far by the skin of our teeth and that we always make it just for the skin of our teeth, but that we will always make it, survive, endure.
