Genetically Modifying Children

The power to genetically modify a child whether it be appearance, mental aspects or internal health is a big responsibility, but with current technology it very well may be the norm of the world’s future. Many people argue that genetic engineering is essential for eliminating certain diseases and impairments; however, giving parents the ability to change physical and mental aspects of their child can give too much power and be detrimental to that child and society as a whole. The act of genetic modification could potentially do more harm than good and with little research on humans there is much room for error. In addition, there are many debates as to whether or not a genetically modified person is an equal to someone who is natural. Genetic modification could potentially have many advantages such as eliminating diseases and birth defects; however, there are many potential errors that could occur so it is questionable as to whether or not it is worth it to practice genetic modification. Many scientists are for the idea of genetic modification because it allows parents, which may not be able to have children for a number of reasons, produce the best offspring possible, but on the opposite end of the spectrum many are against it because it is unnatural and could result in a number of errors such as people not knowing how far is too far with modification. One of the biggest concerns with genetic engineering is that there is little testing on humans done so it is difficult to determine if the practice is ethical being that if problems occur scientists do not know what to do with that child. Genetic engineering may also undermine the child’s autonomy. It is difficult to tell where scientists should draw the line, for example, should parents be able to modify their child’s genotype, as well as phenotype It should also be mentioned the immense improvements to society that this could...
