Chapter 2 Apply Your Skills: Case for Critical Analysis

This case involves two individuals, Vitorio Nunos and Gary Shaw, who are on a plane heading to Vreeland Pharmaceuticals headquarters. They are going to the company’s headquarters because of a recent scandal involving a couple of high-ranking managers. The HR department is requiring all managers to take training sessions and is implementing new requirements for expected behavior. Nunos and Shaw feel offended and are upset with the HR department’s new training program.

1. I think Connie and her staff are right in implanting new leader rules and core values. This company had an issue with this due to the scandal involving high-ranking managers. The only way to ensure this doesn’t happen again is by setting clear rules and expectations for managers to follow.

2. I think that setting clear value statements is a step in the right direction to making an open culture in the workplace. Training sessions will help the managers to better understand what is expected of them and to help them learn the proper way to relate and connect with employees.

3. Vitorio and Gary are on the offensive because they resent the implication they do not know how to interact with employees. They feel they already know all the core values needed to be a good manager. They think the HR department is panicked because of the scandal and is taking the training sessions to far. I think the HR department handled the emphasis of leadership behaviors in the right way. Even though it may make some managers resentful, Vreeland Pharmaceuticals needed to implement and ensure follow through to fix the open culture after the scandal.
