Abstract

Employee referrals are considered to be cost-effective and fast source of recruiting. Due to development of new technology, hiring strategy from referrals can become more advanced and fast paced that can fill the hard-to-fill open position quickly. Joe Divelbiss, vice president of human resources at Trustwave, a data security company, gives examples in the article of how he uses social media for attract referrals and recruit for the job openings. Since social media is a new trend, the HR leaders and recruiting industry capitalize on the connections employees establish through their professional and personal network which in turn increases the reach of referrals as it could be employees’ relatives, friends, former coworkers etc. Technology advancement has made the recruiting easier and social network recruiting vendors are offering a software with algorithms that allow human resource professionals to find more well-matched potential referrals via employees (Referral Booster). The software matches the candidate from LinkedIn and other social media sites for the appropriate job opening from the employees’ networks and connections. As mentioned in the article, the effectiveness of social network referrals remains a matter of debate. There are obstacles that still prevent employees to make quality referrals via social networks. Companies like Accenture use a “Get Referred” program that uses the other side of referral equation, which makes it easier for jobseekers to find referrals in their organizations.
