Coca-Cola is the world's largest beverage company. It manufactures and distributes over 3,000 products under 300 different brands to 200 countries around the world (Wong). People around the globe have tried Coca-Cola products, from Minute Maid lemonade to the renowned classic Coca-Cola. Coca-Cola owns a number of subsidiaries to market to different tastes, such as Vitamin Water and Powerade. It is no surprise that no matter where their location, one can immediately recognize the name “Coca-Cola."

In the soda industry alone, Coca-Cola dominates the market by owning four out of five of the most popular sodas in the world: Coca-Cola, Diet Coke, Sprite, and Fanta. Furthermore, the success of Coca-Cola does not solely rely on a single regional market; operations outside of North America are responsible for 70 percent of the company’s income and 75 percent of sales by volume (Min). The diverse portfolio of product lines and countries of operation has made Coca-Cola resistant even against the most unfavorable conditions in a product or geographical location.

In China especially, Coca-Cola is gaining influence over the quickly-expanding beverage market. According to ACNielsen’s poll results in 2002, the soda giant controls over 50 percent of the Chinese market (Euromonitor). Coca-Cola also spent millions in China in public relations by sponsoring the Beijing Olympics and famous Chinese athletes such as Yao Ming. The overall success in the Chinese beverage market, however, overshadows the problems Coca-Cola has in the fruit juice market. Despite the success of Minute Maid in China, Coca-Cola is unable to overtake Huiyuan, the Chinese fruit juice company, in the pure juice market.

Huiyuan Juice is currently the largest fruit juice maker in China. It dominated 42.6 percent of the fruit and vegetable juice market in 2008 (ACNielsen). Currently, Huiyuan sells over 220 products, including fruit and vegetable juice and nectars under its own name, Quan Yuan and Le...
