Case Study Input Output Devices in Aviation

Thesis: Technology is changing the way humans and technology interact and perform in the flight regime.

I. New technology is assisting both the pilots and air traffic controllers to keep a safe flight regime from takeoff to landing. The Controller-Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC) is one of the devices used.

A. Controller-Pilot Data-Link Communications (CPDLC) is utilized by the ground controllers and the pilots to maintain connectivity.

1. Lessening of workloads on the ATC’s and pilots while in flight. The time to speak and respond is at a premium, enables both parties to be clear and concise

2. The ability to have a separate line of communication for direct or discreet communication to the ATC’s. While traveling over busy corridors, keeps verbal communication to high priority only.

B. Data transfer is unlimited and can give ATC’s all up to date flight information regarding airspeed, altitude, heading, engine parameters, etc.

II. Safety is paramount in all flight regimes and airspace corridors, but there are some questions as to complacency or not having experience in verbal communication.

A. What if the system fails and they are in a congested airspace?

1. Pilots may not have the familiarity or ability to fix the system inflight

2. Pilots will have to use the radios as the primary means of communication.

3. The ability to have pilots and aircrew that are cognizant of the fact that they may have to use one or both systems, in tandem or separately, will improve safety and increase productivity.

III. The information that is given for this topic leads me to believe that we can only benefit from this technology and there will continue to be great innovations as time progresses.

A. The information transfer will improve speed and productivity

B. Route congestion and loitering times will decrease
