Short-Term Problem Statement

SmartStyle Salon Case

(The SmartStyle case is attached to the back of the Case 01 Analysis document.)

Due:

Start of class, Thur. Jan 29

Value:

20 points

Directions:

Write the short term problem faced by Jamika. Your single sentence problem

statement should communicate a cause and the effect.

Submit a keyed statement on a single sheet of paper. Include your name and

the assignment information in the top left corner of the document.

As discussed during class, the myriad of immediate problems faced by Jamika can be

prioritized. All of them can be delegated or dismissed except one.

Jamika has two employees that she suspects are taking unauthorized sick leave causing

stress on today’s bookings. It’s a recurring problem that she has yet to deal with

effectively. (This is a long-term problem that doesn’t require her immediate attention. Its

resolution could be delegated to her assistant manager, or she could wait until her return

from the corporate meeting to deal with it herself.)

Jamika has a dissatisfied customer in her salon which she decided to attend to even

though she has a competent assistant manager willing to deal with her. (This is an

immediate problem that should be delegated to her assistant manager.)

Jamika is worried that her performance as manager of this salon is jeopardizing her

chance of a promotion. (The reasons behind her salon’s poor performance are long-term

and the decision about whether or not to promote her is outside her scope of control.

There’s nothing that can be done, short-term, to resolve any of these factors.)

Jamika must deliver an important status report about her salon the next day to the

corporate executives. She has not yet completed the report or even decided upon her

plan for delivery. Adding to the pressure is that she owes an advance copy of the report

to her group...
