Directions: Read the Case For Critical Analysis "SmartStyle Salons" found at the end of Chapter 1.

After reading the case, complete the following questions:

1. List the three broad management skill categories and explain which skills you think are needed most for a manager at Jamika’s level to have.

The three broad management skills are:

* Conceptual

* Human

* and Technical

So which skills were needed most at a manager level like Jamika?

* First - Human

* Second - Conceptual

* And last - Technical

2. What positive and negative managerial characteristics does Jamika possess?

Jamika’s positive characteristics are:

* Good work relationships

* Interpersonal skills

* Trustworthiness

* Personal integrity

* and the ability to lead and motivate others

Her negative characteristics are:

* Ineffective communication skills and practices

* Failure to clarify performance expectations

* Failure to break old habits

* and poor reactionary behavior

3. How do these traits help or hinder her potential to get to the top position at the Riverwood Mall Salon?

Due to her positive traits, she’s able to get to the top because people want to work for her and these are seen as positive to the corporation to see her as a potential for promotion.

Her negative traits hinder her in that she lets her employees who should be let go, walk all over her. Should she grow a backbone and was able to let those employees go and get more, it would benefit her business in the long run.

4. How do you think Jamika should have handled each of the incidents with Marianne? Holly and Carol Jean? Victoria?
