HUMAN TRAFFICKING

CASE STUDY: RUSSIA VS USA

ABSTRACT

Human Trafficking can be defined as the illegal transportation of people, mainly for the purposes of commercial sex exploitation and forced labour. Human trafficking which is referred to be the “modern slavery” is significantly a universal issue and occurs around the world. The UNODC have expressed in their global report that at least 127 countries illustrate the origins, transit or destination of victims of human trafficking (Stop the Traffik, 2016). Furthermore, The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) highlights human trafficking as the “fastest growing means by which people are enslaved, the fastest growing international crime, and one of the largest sources of income for organised crime” (Stop The Traffik, 2016). By comparing USA with Russia, it allows an examination of the different responses of stakeholders. The segmentation of trafficking into three categories allows a specialised insight into the types of trafficking. Out of all categories, forced labour is the least easily detected, including exploitation within agriculture, fishing, textile, mining, construction and cleaning services (ILO, 2005 as cited in Zimmerman, Hossain & Watts, 2011). As a result of this, strategies to create awareness and strict policies with harsh penalties should be implemented in every country. Everyone entering or leaving a country should be provided safe, peace and equal human rights. Since human trafficking is a growing international crime, all countries in the world including USA and Russia should evaluate their current policies and legislation to show the best explicable action is enacted so that everyone can retain their human rights.
