Leadership styles
In the aviation industry there are two leadership relationship that are commonly applied and they include the team oriented leadership and the charismatic/transformational leadership.
Team oriented leadership
The main design in this theory is to maximize on the liberation of the potential of the persons being led (Lumpe, 2008). The achievement of this is through power distribution in a manner that the subordinates have a similar amount of power as the superiors have. This leadership relationship has its base in both the Socio-Technical Approach and Social Cognitive theory of learning (Lumpe, 2008). Socio-Technical suggests that there is necessity of focusing the attention of the leader on both the completion of the occupation task and the satisfaction of the individual employees. The goal is achievable by the shifting of the competence of the decision making in the groups of work and thus the result is work groups that govern themselves. The manager or leader should have the ability of leading the group in a manner that permits the group as well as every individual employee to achieve self-governance. The leader assumes the roles of supporting the professional learning of the individual, support the social learning of the individual and entertainer in creating a positive atmosphere in the group.
Charismatic/Transformational Leadership style
The aim is to modify employees’ values as well as motives and elevate them to an advanced level following the leaders’ definition. The transformation is achievable using charisma, motivation, mental stimulation and consideration of individuals. Charisma could arise from conveying enthusiasm, motivation is through use of a captivating vision to inspire, and mental stimulation is through a change in the established patterns of thinking of passing on insight and consideration of employees through caring or supporting the employees.
