ABSTRACT

Domestic violence or intimate partner violence is a pattern of assaultive and coercive behaviors including physical, sexual and psychological attacks, as well as economic coercion used by adults or adolescents against their current or former intimate partners.

Examples of physical abuse include slapping, shaking, beating with fist or object, strangulation, burning, kicking and threats with a knife. Sexual abuse includes coerced sex through threats or intimidation or through physical force, forcing unwanted sexual acts, forcing sex in front of others and forcing sex with others. Psychological abuse involves isolation from others, excessive jealousy, control of his or her activities, verbal aggression, intimidation through destruction of property, harassment or stalking, threats of violence and constant belittling and humiliation.

Malaysia has had a Domestic Violence Act since 1994, and there are previous and existing campaigns against domestic violence which aims and calls for the recognition of domestic violence in the public. The campaigns come in a range of media, and one of it is print media. Print media is vital to convey desired message to the audience.

Through this research, it is apparent that domestic violence is a serious crime, yet vast range of public does not aware about the offence and its consequences. How effective does the production of print media act as a platform for the campaign?

In response to this issue, the researcher aims to gain a clear understanding about domestic violence especially in Malaysia and also about effective print production. The method that has been chose for this research was distributing questionnaire and conducting interviews for primary data, while secondary data includes sources from journal, books, newspaper and internet.
