1.0 INTRODUCTION

I under took my internship in Kenya Red Cross Society South Rift which is based in Nakuru. Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) is a non-governmental organization which deals in relief and community empowerment. It is a humanitarian organization whose endeavor is to alleviate human suffering. It is a part of international Red Cross Community governed by the International committee of Red Cross and Red Crescent (ICRC) movement. Humanitarian organizations were created through an act of parliament Cap 256 of Kenya laws of 21st Dec, 1965. Under regionalization programme started in 2003 in Kenya the Red Cross was divided into 7 regions. The South Rift Region based in Nakuru is a Hub where I carried my internship.

Mandate

Section 5 (1) of the Kenya Red Cross Society Act Cap 256 of the Laws of Kenya of 21st December 1965, mandates Kenya Red Cross to:

* To provide relief to those affected by disasters

* To work towards the improvement of health, the prevention of diseases and reduction of suffering in times of peace or war

* To provide aid to the sick, wounded and non-belligerents in times of war, to prisoners of war and civilian sufferers, and relieve the effects of war

* To promote the Junior Red Cross Movement among the youth of all races
