Prof. Garry Argro

MBC100: Fundamentals of Anatomy and Physiology

Regional Anatomy Study

The bone that I chose was the Upper Limb, which consists of the arm, forearm, wrist and hand. I will start to describe the arm and its matching muscles first and work my way inferior to the wrist and hand.

The Muscles associated with the Arm:

1. Biceps Brachii, Brachialis

Both of these muscles occupy the anterior compartment of the arm located on the Humerus section of the upper limb.

2. Triceps Brachii

This muscle group occupies the posterior compartment of the arm, also on the Humerus section of the upper limb.

The Muscles of the Forearm:

1. Pronator Teres, Palmaris Longus, Flexor Carpi Radialis and Ulnaris, Flexor Digitorum profundus and superficialis

This muscle group occupies the anterior compartment of the forearm distal from the arm on the Ulna and Radius.

2. Brachioradialis, Extensor Carpi Radial brevis and longus and Estensor Carpi ulnaris

This muscle group occupies the posterior compartment of the forearm distal from the arm on the Ulna and Radius.

The Muscles of the Wrist and Hand:

1. Pronator Quadratus, Retinaculum

This muscle group occupies the anterior compartment of the wrist while the Retinaculum muscle is located in both of the anterior and posterior of the wrist.

2. Intrinsic hand muscles

This muscle group also occupies the anterior and posterior compartment of the hand. But this group of muscles is divided into 4 groups as per www.emedicine.com; thenar, hypothenar, lumbrical and interossei muscles.
