Competitive Rivalry Homework

Competitive rivalry between the U.S and China over the Africa’s growing oil importance is the ongoing set of competitive actions and responses that occur among them as they both maneuver for an advantageous market position.

Looking at the competitive dynamics of both nations; which is the total set of actions and responses taken by the two nations is as a result of the action taken by the U.S that elicit response from China, and this in turn typically required the U.S to respond since they started the initial action.

These two nations, looking into their resources similarities, in terms of security and technology, both almost have the same strengths and weaknesses, thus this made them to use similar strategies.

China, in other to gain their popularity in Africa, took a strategic action which involved a significant commitment of the nation’s resources and a difficult action to implement and reversed.

Oil relates to global rather than local security, and it has been related or equated to power, but not technology, infrastructure or industrial diversification, although, these are equally significant in strategic turning. China knowing that oil- a pleasing complex industry used it as spring board for their advantage by requesting to have Beijing station troops in Sudan since it is more cost-effective and reliable rather on engaging the U.S in other areas e.g. private security, accountancy, project design etc. Thus operation in Africa rather than feeding energy consumption is more important to the Chinese.

In view of this, America should also respond strategically to the growing influence of China in Africa through the reputation that has already been established and with the resources existence.

For example, the U.S is already in the advance stage of establishing a major naval base in the twin-island of Republic of Sao-Tome and Principe. Even though China showed up seven years later made them to be the second mover.
