Nonparametric Hypothesis Testing

“Nonparametric tests are also referred to as distribution-frees tests. These tests have the obvious advantage of not requiring the assumption of normality or the assumption for homogeneity of variance” (University of New England, 2000, para. 2). Nonparametric tests compare the median of a population instead of the means of a population or sample. A closer examination of information provided below clearly demonstrates nonparametric testing. Additional information provided covers such topics as formulated hypothesis statement, five steps for the hypothesis statement, an explanation of the nonparametric test used for the study, and a display of raw data using graphical and tubular methods.

Formulate Hypothesis Statement

The issue promoting these tests is the argument that the level of income earned by men is greater than women when performing the same type of job and tasks. Testing seeks to discover if a wage gap exists between male and female wages according to a population sample. Testing will determine if these earnings for males have an increase in wages and if female wages are less. The null hypothesis states that the income level that women earn is greater than or equal to the income level that men earn. The alternative hypothesis statement is that the income level that women earned is less than the income level that men earn.

H0: Women’s income is greater than or equal to men’s income

H1: Women’s income is less than men’s income
