Discussion Unit 4

When I was a senior in high school I worked in the summer as The Director of the Winthrop Beach. As Director of the Winthrop beach I was responsible for interviewing and hiring lifeguarding staff to maintain patron safety during the summer. I also was responsible for coordinating swim lessons, and instructing the fellow employees on how to teach varies levels of swim lessons.

Responsibilities that I delegated, was dividing each instructor with a certain swim lesson level, making sure that each instructor was performing each task correctly. I delegated beach maintainess, which needed to be completed daily. I also was responsible for delegating staff to certain water posts on the beach to make sure all members where safe.

I found that it was much easier to make a job chart; each person had certain responsibilities that they needed to follow on that specific day. I found that this worked best when you where dealing with young adults and this were their first job. I also found that this way it was fair and not one person was taking charge and completing all the daily tasks.

The hardest part with delegating responsibilities was trying to make everyone’s summer job fun, but still work in a professional manner. I found it hard to delegate responsibilities to other employees that where almost the same age, but was not the director.

The one thing that sticks out in my mind that I would have improved my success was if I had developed a performance review. This way if someone was not performing in the correct manner, it would be documented, and brought up to the staff member as a warning. If it continued you would ask them to leave his position. Over all this was a great first time job. It was a good learning experience in director along with delegating responsibilities.
