A few years ago I worked at a low budget hotel that required me to apply critical thinking to several work related decisions I made. The most extreme incident I recall was during a morning shift. I had just finished assigning a list of rooms that need to be cleaned to each of my housekeepers. One came back and advised me that while starting her first room she heard a woman and man screaming and fighting in the next room over. I called the room and spoke to the woman who advised me that everything was ok. I advised the housekeeper to continue her day and assured her that everything was ok.

Later that morning she came back and requested that I go with her to the hallway she was assigned to. When we got to the hallway she directed me to the same room from the morning incident. The couple that occupied the room again were arguing and it sounded like they were fist fighting in the room. I again went to the front desk and called the room to see if everything was ok. The male answered and stated that everything was fine and his pregnant wife was asleep and refused to let me speak with her. I immediately thought to go up to the room and check on the lady to be sure she was ok. However, I had to take a step back and think critically about the situation. My first instinct was to go and pound on the door demanding to speak to the woman. This is what I set off to do, however half way up the stairs I realized that my own safety could be at risk.

I returned to the front desk and called my manager to advise him of the situation. I started to panic when he did not answer. I hung up the phone and thought about what I should do to assist the lady without putting myself in danger. So I decided to call the police.
