01044406 Basic VLSI Design

Prerequisite 01043402 Semiconductor Devices

3 (3-0)

The course concerns a detailed study of Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) technology and VLSI design methodologies, high and low level design. The low level design will be emphasised. This starts with Bipolar and MOS device processing, its characteristics, operations and its geometrical impact. Layer, layer representations, design rule and design rule checking, device parameter and modelling, and analog simulation are introduced. Basic CMOS gates such as INV, NAND and NOR studied to investigate the device ratio that affect the speed and power consumption. Standard cells design and performance evaluation are also given. Geometrical layout tools such as Magic or L-edit are invoked to perform case studies.
