Scrooge has to understand the lives of others before he can understand his own.

An overview of Charles Dickens' novella "A Christmas Carol' tells of the character of Ebenezer Scrooge and how he understood the lives of others before reviewing his own life. Ebenezer Scrooge is a self-centered, cold-hearted and solitary man, who undergoes a drastic transformation. Many other significant characters played an important role supporting Scrooge in figuring out the true meaning of life.

The first notable characters are Jacob Marley and the phantoms. In the first stave it shows how Jacob Marley appears to Ebenezer Scrooge as a ghost, regretting his selfish doing when he was still alive, "I wear the chain I forged in life". Marley convinces Scrooge, by referring to the spirits as his only hope to "shun the path" he threads. Without Jacob Marley and the phantoms reappearing to warn Scrooge of his fate, he would not be convinced that the consequence that may happen if did not change. Marley and the phantoms were not the only significant 'other characters' who help Scrooge understand the lives of others and his own.

Bob Cratchit should also be consider as one of a significant characters. Bob is the moral counterpoint in which is an example of what Scrooge should be like, humble, forgiving and a content person. Bob did not complain for not having a coal nor being payed less than half of what he should be paid. This highlights Scrooge's stinginess and his mean nature. Bob also given a toast for Scrooge, "I'll give Mr. Scrooge, the Founder of the Feast" implies that kindness of Bob. The Cratchit illustrates that money is not the key to happiness. Even though these people able to find true happiness, celebrating christmas with their family despite of being poor. Bob Cratchit shows the nature of family life and how Scrooge is viewed from that perspective. This causes Scrooge to change is nature in life.
