The Fight to Prevent Bullying

Bullying has become a major problem in our society today. It is increasing instead of decreasing, and so many people do not understand the effect it is having on our young people. It continues to hurt them in ways we don’t realize sometimes until it is too late. Our children are killing themselves and others because of the hurt and long term consequences of bullying. Bullying is growing and we need to help our children put a stop to bullying. We need to have prevention programs that succeed and keep pushing till we have them.

The reason I chose this topic and think it needs attention is because it is hurting our children and needs action taken by the adults involved in the children’s lives. Education of the children and adults to understand the long lasting effects of bullying needs to take place. Children sometimes don’t understand how they are hurting someone who may make them wants to hurt themselves or others. Those people in the position to help need to watch for the signs of bullying and step in and stop it.

Sixth grade through ninth seems to have the most frequent incidents of bullying. Sixty percent of those students who are bullies are more likely to have been convicted of crime by the age of 24. The students who are bully victims grow up with more self- esteem and anxiety problems and are also more likely to have been victims of bullying than students who have not.

Each day there are thousands of kids being bullied, and no one doing anything about it. Some are being bullied to the point they are bringing guns to school. Many of the students that have brought guns to school and committed school shootings do it because they have been bullied and want to get revenge. They hurt the entire school by striking back at the ones that have hurt them or stood by and watched. The anger rages to the point they don’t care who they hurt....
