Summary

Training and development are both vital to any organization. At whatever level a new employee joins the organization – in relation to their knowledge, skills, and abilities, the employee needs proper orientation and training to adapt successfully into the position and to gain an understanding of the expectations. As the employee develops in the position, the need for on-going training is important for technological advances or procedural changes to create a more efficient or economical process. The overall goal of training is to ensure employees are in line with the organizations goals. Managers need to maintain a close relationship with employees to make sure they are on the correct path and be vigilant of any potential pitfalls or interruptions with the employee as they progress.

Training programs should be tailored to the individual organization and have defined goals to determine whether an employee is on track; the programs sometimes may require adjustment to mold to the individual employee who may be struggling and require remedial intervention – that is if management still feels the employee is worth that to the organization. Training programs should be very structured and management should be selective of the employees they use as trainers to ensure the business is represented properly, the trainees needs are met and matched correctly, and progress is being made.

As with training, development of the staff as well as new hires is vital to continue success of the operation. Motivation is the key ingredient to inspiring the employees to adapt, grow and develop with the organization. Motivation can be easily pursued by following a few simple strategies such as: use positive reinforcement, eliminate threats and punishment, be flexible, have participants set personal goals, design...
