Huffman Trucking

Huffman Trucking currently uses six different operating systems for their company in eight different buildings. These operating systems include Windows 3, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Mac 7. Each one of these operating systems has something that the company needs or offers to fulfill each of the differing workstations needs.

Windows 3 was released in 1990 and was the first operating system to come preloaded on the computer, since all operating systems before that came on floppy drives. MS-DOS executive file manager and program launcher was replaces with a list-based file manager and the icon based program manager, making launching programs easier.

Windows 95 was a GUI based OS that was consumer oriented. It featured many improvements over Windows 3, including “plug and play” features. Windows 95 also upgraded from 16 bit architecture to 32 bit multitasked architecture.

Windows 98 was the first OS to use Windows Driver Model, which allows developers to write source compatible drivers for all future versions of Windows.

Windows XP professional is more than likely being used because it is geared more toward business functions and has the capability to be integrated into network domains and administrative share functions.

Mac operating systems have always been preferential to people in the graphics arts community so it is no big surprise that this company is also using it in this capacity. Macs simplicity of use and powerful graphical functions make it an obvious choice when producing professional graphics. The Mac OS 7 allowed for the running of common software such as Photoshop, Dreamweaver, and Microsoft Office quickly and still has little resource requirements, and runs these programs as fast, if not faster than Windows 3.1 or 95.

The older operating system may have been chosen for the small requirements they have on the hardware. You would be hard pressed today to find a computer that couldn’t run Windows 3....
