People Mean Everything Former Secretary Of State Colin Powell once said, “Organization doesn't really accomplish anything. Plans don't accomplish anything, either. Theories of management don't much matter. Endeavors succeed or fail because of the people involved. Only by attracting the best people will you accomplish great deeds.” In today’s world running a business or being in the top tier of managementof a business can be quite a task. Colin Powell is right. The people who make up thestaff are going to be the key factor to any business. By following the four fundamentals of management it could help manage abusiness to success. The four fundamentals are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. Taking a look at each of these fundamentals you can learn how to be effective in each area. Finding a balance of each fundamental is important. Letting one outweigh another can be detrimental to the management of your business. Planning is identifying goals for your organization and making a plan that will help you achieve them as well as assessing current situations and noting resources available to help achieve them. The Air Force Mishap Prevention program, specifically the area regarding driving under the influence of alcohol, DUI, is a good example of outstanding planning. 36 people in the United States die and approximately 700 more are injured every day in motor vehicle crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver. Last year alone approximately 1.4 million people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. To date, almost 13,000 drunken driving deaths have occurred this year. Each of those deaths was preventable. (1) When the Air Force loses its personnel to things that are avoidable, such as a DUI, this islike throwing away $100,000. That is the estimated cost to train an Airman. Because of this that the Air Force takes alcohol awareness very seriously. The Air Force has made a plan to get a grip on alcohol abuse.
