Communicating In Forums 02/25/10

It's important to use inclusive language when communicating in class discussions, because it’s not appreciated when you single out a person’s sex. However, getting your point across in a positive way without negative stereotype can be helpful. Anthony needs to remember that he cannot physically speak to his classmates nor have a face to face conversation with them, so it’s important to focus on a gender neutral communication style of writing. He mentioned he was surprised that in a conference there was a woman speaking. At that point of the response I am sure his classmate was offended.

Anthony could have avoided the mistake several different ways. He was going to dinner with a friend before he responded to the question and he was in a rush. It’s his responsibility to choose his priorities and in my opinion he does not have them in order. My opinion to him would be to complete his assignment before they need to be posted, to have enough time to double check his work. He can ask his classmate in what way his response sounded or felt sexes to her, and how he can change the way he communicates through class forums. She can give him her opinions and insights about how important it is not to stereotype. However, in today’s world women always get stereotyped. She may give him better writing styles that are not offensive to others. It’s a big deal with today’s writing so revising his work may have given him a chance to correct himself, to where it wouldn’t offend or stereotype no one.

In conclusion, my three pointers for Anthony would be; to double check his work regardless of what’s going on around him. He should choose the most important priorities on a daily basis first. Lastly to apologize and ask his classmate for feedback on how he offended her.
