Skeletal Diseases Paper

I know that skeletal diseases affect the bones mainly and that they hinder the skeletal system to do its best. Some skeletal diseases make the bones light or hollow, while others may cause deformities or irregular shapes. I want to know what the most common bone disease is. I want to know what it is, how it is contracted, how many people it affects, its symptoms, and cures or treatment. By knowing about this disease I can better understand the skeletal system and also be on the lookout for this disease for my own health and those close to me. I ended up figuring out that Osteoporosis was the most common bone disease, so I focused on that for my research.

There is a site that I have used in the past for my random medical moments of curiosity that is also sponsored by the government: the US National Library of Medicine, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/aboutnlm/. I trust this site mainly because I know the government is responsible for it. Also, I have used it in the past and it has served me well, so I know from experience that this site is valid. So then I typed in osteoporosis in the search bar and I came to this site where I extracted all my needed information: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0001400/.

Osteoporosis occurs when the body fails to form enough new bone, when too much old bone is reabsorbed by the body, or both. The leading causes of osteoporosis are a drop in estrogen in women at the time of menopause and a drop in testosterone in men. Women over age 50 and men over age 70 have a higher risk for osteoporosis. There are no symptoms in the early stages of the disease, but later symptoms include: bone pain or tenderness, more fractures, loss of height, and/or low back pain due to fractures of the spinal bones. The goals of osteoporosis treatment include pain control, stopping the deteriorating of the bones, and strengthening the bone. This can be done with medication,...
