Critical Thinking

Introduction

Critical thinking is an essential part of daily life. On any given day individuals make pivotal decisions for his or her continued existence, whether it is good or bad; for business purposes or personal. In today’s business world, critical thinking is imperative for any organization to be successful. Applying critical thinking in the workplace is essential and when completely understood, not only will the company reap the benefits but also the employees.

In this paper, a description of what critical thinking entails will be provided, a personal workplace experience involving critical thinking skills when making a decision will be shared, and finally the importance and benefits of critical thinking will be discussed.

Describe Critical Thinking

Several definitions may come to mind when an individual thinks about what critical thinking means. ”Critical thinking is that mode of thinking—about any subject, content, or problem—in which the thinker improves the quality of his or her thinking by skillfully analyzing, assessing, and reconstructing it,” (Elder & Paul, 2006, p. 25). Critical thinking is a method in which an individual vigorously participates, and with ability he or she can make smart decisions based on what he or she has experienced, believes, and has seen. Critical thinking assist individuals in asking pertinent questions, considering facts presented in support of disagreements, better understanding of difficult problems, and finally making intelligent decisions. Critical thinking is important as one realizes that many problems do not always lend themselves to clear-cut solutions (Bacal & Associates, n.d.). Whichever description an individual may choose to follow, each will involve the ability to think and rationalize the best decision for any situation or circumstance present.
